"A notorious criminal, Charles Emeka, popularly called Fela, who had allegedly been terrorising residents of Owerri, the capital of Imo State, and its environs, has been killed.
It was gathered on Wednesday that a mob in Owerri battered him to death.
Emeka, a native of Aguneze in the Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of the state, was said to have confessed to the mob that he could not remember the number of persons he had killed.
The irate mob subsequently inflicted injuries on him before the intervention of the state police command.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, told our correspondent that Fela had already been battered to death before the intervention of the police, adding that efforts to revive him at a hospital proved abortive.
The PPRO said the police would have loved to interrogate him so that his gang members could be nabbed.
He said, “Emeka was confirmed dead on arrival at the Imo State Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, Owerri. Emeka, aka Fela, and his gang members were responsible for the multiple robberies and murder cases in the state. One of them was the case of Chigozie Onyemeam, who was attacked in front of the Federal High Court, Owerri, on June 26, 2016.”
Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said Fela was also linked to the murder of one Lucky of Umuonyeche on September 17, 2016, and one Goodluck David of Oguamalam Street in Owerri.
The PPRO said Emeka and his gang also terrorised residents of Umezurike , Amaigbo, Enereji, Royce, Oparanozie and Lobo streets, among others in Owerri.
He also disclosed that a locally-made double-barrel had gun with two live cartridges was recovered from the victim.
He urged members of the public with useful information on the whereabouts of other members of the gang to report to the police.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, said the command was poised to deal decisively with anyone found breaking law and order and hampering the peace in the state.
He said, “The Imo State Police Command shall not rest until we have decisively dealt with criminals in the state.”
