Bride jailed in sham marriage sting after getting husband's name wrong

A bride who got her would-be husband’s name wrong as she prepared to walk down the aisle for a sham marriage has been jailed for 18 months.

Immigration officials swooped on Lambeth registry office as Emmaculate Lumnwi, 29, and Nika Lokko, 35, prepared to exchange their vows, Inner London crown court had heard.

Lumnwi gave herself away by calling Lokko, who used a French passport under the name of Messangan Sergio Kouye, by his real name.

The bride, a marketing consultant with a masters degree in business, moved to the UK from Cameroon in 2011 on a student visa but was turned down when she applied to stay permanently.

She enlisted Lokko, a NHS facilities manager who was already married, to pose as her husband-to-be at the bogus ceremony on March 3 last year. He was also sentenced to 18 months at a court hearing yesterday.

Lumnwi, of Tulse Hill, and Lokko, of Camberwell, had both denied conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration. Lokko was also given a 12-month jail sentence to run concurrently for misusing identity documents.

Sentencing them, Judge Nigel Seed QC said: “These offences are serious. Immigration is a major concern, a huge public concern."

Many people are entitled to be in this country ... But this was a decision to undermine the rules.”

Sentencing them, Judge Nigel Seed QC said: “These offences are serious. Immigration is a major concern, a huge public concern.

He added: “The courts have made it clear that there had to be immediate custody.”

Jill Smith, head of the South London Immigration Enforcement team, said: “Sham marriage abuse will not be tolerated.

Our investigators work very closely with registrars to identify suspicious marriages, and will not hesitate to act. Whether you are a participant or an organiser, you will be caught and brought before the courts.”

But a jury at Inner London crown court found the pair guilty after deliberating for less than 45 minutes.Lokko was also convicted of possession of a French identity card with intent after the seven-day trial.

Lokko is married with two children and a naturalised British citizen. He moved to the UK from Togo in 2003 and was employed as an NHS facilities manager.

He said so-called proxy marriages are common in his country and he was “ignorant” that they are illegal here .

“There is a need to peg the marriage age now” – Emir Sanusi makes a stand against underage marriage

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II has called for the pegging of marriage age in Nigeria because of the problems such marriages create – especially for the women and the children.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor made this known via his Instagram handle on Saturday. He said:

(Marriage of women below 18 years) – Women are suffering from reproductive health challenges (because) of such marriages. Time has come (for) the Muslim community (to) live by the reality of economic recession and consequences of early marriage.

The era when people gave out their daughters in marriage at early ages and asked the husbands to wait till they were ripe was nothing but a deception. According to me, the strategy no longer works as it has led to cases of divorce and other ugly situations.

In the past the rich and the poor married four wives and bore between 30 and 40 children because the economy was not only buoyant, but also because people were not relying on government for sustenance. The harsh economic realities now make it impossible for people to feed twice a day these days. Unfortunately our people do not change and somebody with virtually nothing still give birth to 20 or 30 children and this must stop.

There is a need to peg the marriage age now because of the challenges early marriage is posing. The marriage age in Egypt at present is 18 while that of Malaysia and Morocco is 19 and 17 respectively. Why don’t we (Nigeria) urgently call for pegging of marriage ages within Muslim Ummah in Nigeria?

Nigerian Muslims also practice the Malikiyas School of thought as these countries. We should follow suit and peg our own marriage ages for our own good. I urge the relevant authorities to create a law that would punish anybody that gives birth to children and allows them to suffer. Most of these neglected children not only turn victims of social vices but also engage in terrorism.

This comes 2 days after the Katsina Emirate Council upheld the marriage of a 14-year-old girl to the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumuni Usman, 64.

The girl was alleged to have been abducted and converted to Islam, before being married to the Emir.

Kannywood actress Rahama Sadau gets invited to see a movie set in Hollywood

Top Kannywood actress, Rahama Sadau was expelled from the Hausa film industry by the Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria after featuring in a romantic musical video.

The association after her expulsion also warned other actors and actresses to henceforth follow the rules binding their participation in the Kannywood film industry.

This caused outrage on social media and many supported her, advising her to excel even more in more successful movie industries in the world (Hollywood, Nollywood), etc.

Well Rahama has now revealed that Filmmaker Jeta Amata and music star Akon have invited her to visit the set of their new film in Hollywood - Los Angeles, California. Congratulations to her!
